The Royal Decree 99/2011 establishes the organization of official university education, including the doctorate. This arrangement affects both the activity and training of the doctoral student during his years of training and research as well as the final result, the Defense of the Doctoral Thesis.
The duration of the Thesis will be 3 years from the entry into the Research Phase (enrollment and payment of the first academic tutorship), that can be extended for an additional year. Exceptionally, the Academic Committee may prolong this extension for an additional year. This is the usual formula, the so-called full-time Doctorate. In special circumstances, the completion of a part-time doctorate is contemplated and, accordingly, the duration of the thesis will be 5 years, with the possibility of an extension for an additional period of two years. Likewise, and exceptionally, this period may be extended for an additional year. Carrying out a part-time doctorate requires the authorization of the UPM Doctoral Commission, which follows the request of the Academic Commission of the Doctoral Program. In the same way, the change of modality to full-time doctorate also requires authorization from the UPM Doctoral Commission, prior approval by the Academic Commission of the Doctorate Program.
During the Thesis, any type of documentation or request must be delivered to the Program Secretariat.

These documents will be reviewed by the Academic Committee of the Program, which meets once a month, and, following its endorsement, will be submitted to the Academic Committee of the Doctorate for its final approval.
Within the first 6 months of the Doctoral Thesis, the Thesis Director will be assigned, following the endorsement of the COMMITMENT FOR TRAINING AND SUPERVISION OF THE DOCTORAL STUDENT (COMPROMISO DE FORMACIÓN Y SUPERVISIÓN DEL DOCTORANDO) by the student and the Thesis Director (and the Tutor if applicable). The document must be delivered in duplicate to the Secretariat of the Program to be countersigned by the Coordinator of the Academic Committee of the Program, the Vice-directorate for Research and Doctorate and the Vice-Rector. This document governs the rights and obligations of the doctoral student and their supervisors.
